OAK
RIDGE, Tenn. - Les Price, Federal Project Director for the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS); David Arakawa, Federal Project Director for the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences; and Phil Stumbo, of ORO’s Office of Nuclear Fuel Supply; recently received certification under this program. The program began in 1999 throughout the DOE Complex to establish criteria and standards for project managers based on the total of the projects they manage. “Effective project management is essential to success of highly complex projects in the Department,” said Gerald Boyd, ORO Manager. “As we look to offer our capabilities to organizations here and outside ORO, we have a resource in these individuals who can ensure our projects remain within scope and cost and stay on schedule.” Price, Arakawa, and Stumbo were required to demonstrate competence through experience or training in a variety of subject areas, such as acquisition strategy, contract types, and leadership/supervision. While each person’s experience was different, the diversity of projects and programs is an asset to ORO. Price, Federal Project Director for SNS, said, “Of course, receiving the certificate is an honor, but the greater honor is being able to work in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and others in DOE to build a project as exciting as SNS.” He has served in a number of capacities at both ORO and
DOE Headquarters for 38 years in the Science, Environmental Management, and
Nuclear Energy programs. Stumbo, who is based in ORO’s Office of Nuclear Supply, has 27 years of experience with uranium programs at Oak Ridge. He currently serves on the Source Evaluation Board for the Infrastructure Services Contracts at the Paducah and Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plants. “Although I have been managing projects for DOE-ORO for 27 years, it is still rewarding and gratifying to receive the certification and recognition for my experience and capabilities,” he said. The DOE Headquarters’ Office of Engineering and Construction Management coordinates the program and a Headquarters Certification Review Board approves candidate certifications. -DOE- R-04-030 |
